For this tutorial, we're going to build a 3D river valley landscape.

The model will demonstrate one of the most important concepts in geography:

Water flows downhill from higher elevations, shaping the landscape as it travels towards lower ground.

Your finished model can include:

High mountains → hills → valley → river → waterfall → lake → lowland

You can also add vegetation, buildings, roads and labels.

Step 1: Decide What Your Landscape Will Show

Before touching the foam, draw a simple plan.

Don't worry about artistic ability.

A rough sketch is enough.

For example:

        MOUNTAINS

The most important thing is to establish high areas and low areas.

Step 2: Think in Elevation

This is where the project becomes more than a craft activity.

Geography is largely about understanding how the shape of the Earth affects what happens on it.

Before carving anything, ask:

Where is the highest point?

This could be a mountain.

Where is the lowest point?

This could be a lake or lowland.

Where will the water go?

The river should travel downhill.

Where will erosion occur?

Steeper slopes can represent areas where flowing water erodes the land.

Where would people build?

Flat areas near rivers may represent farmland or settlements.

This gives the student something meaningful to explain during their presentation.


Step 3: Create the Base

Place one XPS sheet on the cutting board.

This will become the foundation of your landscape.

You don't necessarily need to use the entire 30 × 30 cm sheet as a perfect square.

Depending on the assignment, you could create:

  • a rectangular landscape

  • an island

  • a mountain region

  • a river catchment

  • a coastal landscape

For a simple school project, keeping the basic square shape makes construction easier.


Step 4: Plan the Mountains

Take the second XPS sheet.

Draw the rough outline of your mountain regions.

Don't make the mountains perfectly symmetrical.

Real mountains aren't perfect cones.

Instead, create:

  • high peaks

  • ridges

  • lower slopes

  • irregular valleys

Step 5: Cut the Major Shapes

Now carefully cut the foam.

For younger students, an adult can perform the main cutting while the student handles the planning, marking, sanding, texturing and painting.

Always cut on the supplied cutting mat or another suitable protected work surface.

Keep fingers away from the cutting path and never force the blade through the material.


Step 6: Stack the Foam

One of the biggest advantages of using XPS foam is that you can create elevation by stacking pieces.

Think of the landscape like a contour map.

For example:

Step 7: Create the Valley

Now mark the path where your river will travel.

Start near the mountains.

Gradually widen the valley as the river moves towards the lower land.

This is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate a real geographical concept:

Rivers often begin in high elevations and travel downhill.

You can create the valley using the knife and then refine it using the flexible sanding blocks.

Use the sanding block to soften the transitions between:

mountain → slope → valley

Avoid making the valley walls completely vertical.

Natural landscapes usually contain a mixture of steep and gradual slopes.


Step 8: Carve the River

Now comes one of the most important parts of the project.

Mark the river route.

Start narrow near the mountains.

Then gradually make it wider.

For example:

Step 9: Add Tributaries

Small streams can join the main river from different directions.

Step 12: Shape the Slopes

Take the Flexi-Sand block and gently smooth the transition between different elevations.

This is one of the easiest ways to make foam terrain look less like cut foam and more like a real landscape.

Instead of:

sharp step → sharp step → sharp step

try:

high → slope → valley

Step 13: Add Rock Faces

Not every mountain needs to be smooth.

Choose several areas to represent exposed rock.

Use the profile tools to create irregular faces.

Then lightly sand some of the edges.

A simple technique is:

  1. Score several irregular lines.

  2. Add a few deeper cracks.

  3. Sand the surrounding surface.

  4. Leave some sharp edges.

  5. Paint the rock darker than the surrounding terrain.

This creates the appearance of cliffs and exposed geological layers.


Step 14: Create a Lake

At the lowest point of your model, create a small lake.

The lake can be connected directly to your river.

This allows you to demonstrate:

high elevation → river → low elevation → lake

Paint the lake blue.

Then use lighter blue or white around selected edges to create the appearance of shallow water.


Step 15: Add a Floodplain

This is another great educational feature.

Near the lower section of the river, create a relatively flat area.

This represents a floodplain.

You can label it:

FLOODPLAIN

Then explain:

A floodplain is relatively flat land beside a river that can be affected by flooding.

Step 16: Add Vegetation

Now the model starts to come alive.

You can add:

Forest

Use small pieces of sponge, model foliage or miniature trees.

Grassland

Bushland

Farmland

Create small rectangular fields.

Step 17: Add a Small Human Settlement

Step 18: Build a Bridge

Step 19: Paint the Landscape

Step 20: Use Dry Brushing for Realistic Rocks

Here's a simple technique that can make a huge difference.

Paint the rocks a dark colour first.

Allow them to dry.

Then put a small amount of lighter paint on your brush.

Wipe most of the paint off onto a piece of cardboard or paper.

Then lightly brush across the raised surfaces.

The paint catches the raised areas while leaving the cracks dark.

Step 21: Add a Legend

This is one of the most important parts if you're submitting the model for school.

Don't make the teacher guess what everything represents.
