Trenches are the ultimate "Force Multiplier" for your gaming table. They provide cover, create narrow chokepoints, and instantly give your board a war-torn, cinematic feel. Using XPS foam makes this massive project lightweight and highly detailed.
The Basic Dimensions (28mm - 32mm Scale)
-
Total Width: 14cm (approx. 5.5 inches).
-
Trench Depth: 3.5cm β 5cm. You want your Space Marines or Guardsmen to be mostly hidden, but still able to "peek" over the top.
-
Base Plate: Use 25mm XPS foam or MDF as a sturdy foundation.
Step 1: The "Bulk" Cut
Take a thick block of XPS (30mm or 50mm). Instead of digging into the foam, it is often easier to build the "banks" onto a flat base.
-
Cut two long strips of foam with a sloped edge on one side (like a triangle).
-
Glue these strips onto your base plate, leaving a 6cm - 8cm gap in the middle. This gap is your "walkway."
Step 2: Adding the "Duckboards" and Revetments
A plain foam trench looks like a ditch. To make it a Warhammer trench, you need structural details:
-
The Floor: Cut thin strips of XPS foam (or use coffee stirrers) to create "duckboards"βwooden slats that keep soldiers out of the mud.
-
The Walls: Use corrugated cardboard (peel off the top layer to reveal the ridges) to simulate corrugated iron sheets holding back the dirt. Use toothpicks or thin foam strips as "timber" supports to hold the iron in place.
Step 3: Battle Damage & Texture
This is where XPS shines over regular styrofoam:
-
Impact Craters: Use a hobby knife to gouge out "shell holes" in the banks.
-
Stone & Dirt: Roll a ball of crumpled aluminum foil over the flat areas of the foam. It will press a realistic, non-repeating stone/earth texture into the surface instantly.
-
The "Mud" Mix: Mix PVA glue, cheap black acrylic paint, and some playground sand. Slop this into the corners where the walls meet the floor to simulate accumulated filth.
Step 4: Sealing & Painting (The Golden Rule)
DO NOT use spray primer yet. The chemicals will melt your hard work.
-
The Seal: Paint the entire piece with a 50/50 mix of black paint and Mod Podge (or PVA glue). This creates a hard shell.
-
The Base: Now you can spray or brush on a dark brown/black.
-
The Drybrush: Heavily drybrush with a mid-tone brown (like Mournfang Brown), followed by a light "dusty" drybrush of Tyrant Skull or an off-white on the sharpest edges.
Step 5: The Finishing Touch
Add "battlefield scatter" to the trench:
-
Tiny piles of "spent shell casings" (chopped up plastic rods or thick wire).
-
Discarded "sandbags" (made from air-dry clay or small rectangles of XPS foam sanded round).
Pro Tip: 2.5cms thick sheets for bases and 3cm or 5cm sheets for the trench walls. Itβs the perfect starter bundle for a full 4'x4' table build!
